Proper Furniture Placement in your New Restaurant

Establishment of a restaurant and planning its layout is a totally different ballgame than setting up your house dining room. While the latter has only one program and a limited number of guests list, in the former dining room has several tables to accommodate both it has to cater to the tastes and sensibilities of a form in much larger groups of people. It is a challenge that you can take, however, if you have done your homework. That's where all your customers will spend their time. The immediate impact on the entry must be fabulous, as the saying goes? The first impression is the last impression? . So start working on crooked close. Start by setting up tables in the dining room. They must be sufficiently spaced to allow the exception of mental action uncontrolled circulation. Waiters customers must have enough space to move without crushing one another. If you want to use your space to the extreme, we should not neglect this important aspect. If necessary, go ahead and a ! mock exercise to check the problem areas. Select a package to go eat with all your settings. Have you chosen a theme for your pub? Classical and Modern intelligent and exclusive or relaxed and luxurious, the choice should be made by you targeting customers in your business plan. Who are you for the catering? Are you targeting students interested in a new snack and coffee, or you plan something for the man who wants relatives a good time with his family in a comfortable environment? You also need to have a complete picture of the ability to pay of your customer base, who will decide on your budget for the establishment, as well as for actions later, as prices on the menu. You might well be catering to a clientele purely working class, in this case, your settings will be very different from that of a family restaurant. Other areas that deserve special attention are the choice of the dining room chairs, placing the money and fight decorative aspects. Make sure the dining room ! chairs are found with the paintings. The counter in most resta! urants i s mainly positioned closed the door to the kitchen (as opposed to the exit in the case of most stores), which allows the manager to counter easily maintain a tag commands. If you are opening a common foreign, the view will be the main attraction, and you do not need to spend too much on the inside except for the cleanliness of the fundamental aspects. Interior decoration of a restaurant, it's another game, however. Use Amish furniture to give a class at your restaurant, which is second to none. Elegant enough to attract attention, yet firm and strong to work against the use long and crude. The Amish particular excellence of the main furniture lies in its own style and atmosphere that it brings to your room. Having chosen the basic furniture and settings, it is now time to work on the selection of dishes and setting up your kitchen. More details about these issues in my next article. My gift card

MACQUARIE Bank chief executive Allan Moss has tipped further increases in interest rates and warned the risk of a decline in global markets on a global scale because credit is real. The bank chief's prediction is on the back of a huge $ 34 billion tax cut campaign promise of the Coalition and following the signs farther in the United States this week that the credit crisis is far from completed. Economists have expressed concern that other tax cuts already in an economy increasingly force interest rates up. "Australian interest rates are headed, Mr. Moss said. "The credit market is working in the improvement of improvement, but they are relatively slow and placid there is a risk of a temporary setback. But we do the thought of the worst is over. "I think the real problem is the lack of transparency, investors do not really know where the contractors are the main issues." Silent on debtMacquarie has also been accused of lacking transparency. At a recent consultative meeting M! r. Press Moss refused to quantify the amount of the debt of the bank's balance sheet. In an interview with the Financial Times he responded to increasing criticism of the Macquarie model highly leveraged, especially in the United States where Jim Chanos of Kynikos Associates, the world's largest short-selling hedge fund, has Bruyants been a criticism of Macquarie. Mr. Chanos has said on several occasions that the Macquarie model works only cheap debt and rising asset prices. "The average leverage in our infrastructure fund is less than 60%, which is reasonably conservative for the high quality of these assets and are very high quality assets, with very, very reliable income streams, & quot; Mr Moss said. "Our actual observation, even in the last few months is that we have been able to refinance without difficulty and on good terms." The head of Macquarie also stated that if the conditions were been tightened, there was little scope for so-called vulture funds. "Most of the ! loans are performing rest, the most active are always successf! ul, so t here are not many opportunities available assets," said Moss. "The main feature is that the underlying equity markets globally is that there is still strong growth. "We hope that in the Asian time zone, which houses two-thirds of our business, good economic growth will continue as long as we can to a moderate degree view." Mr. Moss has also ruled Any relocation of the headquarters of Macquarie in London, which was under consideration. "The Asian time zone is where the action is for the whole world," he said. Big dry to Big Apple

THERE should be a law opposed to it, combining two of the most addictive food products in one package. But an Aussie company has done it with great success.

Jason O’Connor, marketing manager of Seatonfire Chilli Chocolate, said his product created the perfect symmetry of the deep, rich taste of chocolate followed by the overwhelming sensation of the chilli.

And from a broad way called Lazy Acres, near Murphy’s Creek, just outside Toowoomba in Queensland, Seatonfire is its devilishly-hot chilli chocolate to the cosmos.

The chocolate piqued the interest of confectionery buyers from London to Tokyo to New York at last month’s Fine Food Australia exhibition in Sydney.

Mr O’Connor, who left behind a 15-year marketing career in Melbourne to found Seatonfire! with his chocolatier mother Lynne Seaton-Anderson, will be in the Big Apple this week talking distribution deals, followed by business trips to London and Tokyo.

“It’s very exciting for a little farm in the intervening of nowhere to be able to have this product available to the world,” Mr O’Connor said.

While he was working in craft development for global fashion and jewellery brands - as well as running his own wedding planning business - the family farm back in Queensland was feeling the effects of the never-ending drought.

The cattle operations ceased, but the farm’s hardy 10-year-old chilli plantation prospered in the big dry.

Mother and son then hatched a plan to fill a gap in the global market for a block of chocolate with true bite.

“The Aztecs have been blending chocolate and chilli for a gazillion years but we did a tour through Belgium and France last year and looked at what’s available ! in the market and there was nothing with the effect of ours,&#! 8221; he said.

Mrs Seaton-Anderson has been making the chilli chocolate for with reference to six years, and the trip to Europe last year made her and her son realise just how well she was doing it.

“We did a lot of chocolate corrosive,” Mr O’Connor said, “and we realised that what she was doing was onerous.

“But we also realised we needed to introduce Belgian Courverture chocolate, and better packaging.”

He said the Seatonfire edge is the chillis, which are grown chemical-free and therefore don’t give the chocolate a bitter undergo.

Until the trip to Europe, Mrs Seaton-Anderson had been selling her chilli products - including chutneys, jams, chilli lime cordial (for vodka and ice) and chilli extract (for sanguinary marys) - in the local farmers markets.

“We now sell the chocolate online (www.seatonfire.com) and we’re looking for national and international stockists,” Mr O’Con! nor said.

It’s only been a year since development of the company began, with the company officially formed in April.

The packaging and branding was only finished a month the Sydney Fine Food Exhibition, but they still think Mr O’Connor’s own experience in pitching to the style-conscious, high-value end of the market.

“The packaging’s been designed as a gifting item to accompany a bottle of wine at a dinner squad or a thank you or a happy birthday or whatever,” he said.

“The promise of something beautiful is what we’re projecting with this product - but the product inside is the most exciting part.”

“It’s really a gourmet product and it needs to be carefully positioned,” he said.

The company expects its key markets to be those which have had a marked lift in chocolate imports, namely the US, the UK, Korea and Japan.

However, he insists Seatonfire will take! its time sewing up distribution, looking for “the perfe! ct fit&# 8221; with partners to represent it globally.

Mr O’Connor said he and his mother had some big plans for the company.

“Within three years we aim to have the chilli chocolate in every ski field in the world.” he said.

“And we have two products in development, a hot (as in chilli hot) chocolate cocoa and a hot chocolate sauce.”

Mr O’Connor said he did not deliberately set out to garner between nations interchange before establishing the company locally, it was just the way things happened.

“Our earliest interviews were at the Fine Food Exhibition in Sydney,” he said. “We were part of the Austrade group and it brought international buyers to us that is how we got the leads.”

While Seatonfire has gained some interest from David Jones locally, Austrade leading economist Tim Harcourt said the concourse was an example of a company that was “born global”.

“Th! ose businesses succeed internationally having to ‘make it’ before anything else locally, like Seatonfire, which has decided to keep on exports first rather than establishing good fortune in Australia first,” Mr Harcourt said.

“Global brands can be built from small local companies - especially in and regional Australia.”

Equipment Leasing FAQs

The most frequently asked question about leasing is the advantages behind it. People want to know about the benefits of leasing over buying any type of equipment. The most prominent advantage of leasing is that it provides the lessee with capital that can be used for maintenance and upkeep of the . Another advantage that the lessee has is that he can add equipment that is contemporary at any time during the lease period. This advantage is not available when a person buys the equipment instead of leasing it.

Another at short intervals asked question is about the definition of ‘let.’ Lease can be defined as an agreement or a contract between two parties that explains the terms and conditions such as the time period of the let, payment options and the da! te of of the equipment.

Questions regarding cancellation of a lease are also frequent but canceling a lease is not possible. The lessee is bound by the law to make payments according to the terms and conditions in the bargain, even if the equipment that is letd is not in use.

Queries about tax payments are frequent and people want to know whether there are any tax deductions when a lease contract is signed. The lessee must pay the taxes that are connected to the lease such as sales tax, which is charged apart and has to be paid with the monthly payments of the let.

Questions about procedure for acquiring a lease contract are also raised. The first step in leasing any type of equipment is the filling out of a simple one-page form that is called the credit application form. After sending out the financial information to the lessor, the lessee has to wait for the lease documents that are sent to him for signing.

The most of moment question arises if the! rigging is damaged. There is no replacement guarantee in the ! let cont ract and it is better to insure the equipment because the entire lease contract depends upon the plight of the equipment at the end of the lease period.

How Can Hiring Your Kids Help You Save on Income Taxes?

Hiring your children in your business can be a great tax savings strategy, as well as a way to teach your children about business and money.

Wages paid to your children ( the ages 7 and 17) are a valid business deduction, as long as they do bona fide work, and they are compensated fairly.

Your children can earn up to $5,350 (the standard deduction amount for 2007) before they will owe any tax. Because you are getting a business removal for the stipend paid to your child, this is income that you also will not pay taxes on.

In addition, if your children are under age 18, you don’t have to pay Social Security or Medicare taxes on them. You do not have to pay unemployment taxes on them as long as they are under age 21. This is a huge tax savings sinc! e you would have to pay these taxes on any other employee you hired.

Even if you pay your children more than the standard deduction amount, you will still come out in advance. In most cases, your children will be in a appear stormy tax bracket than you, so by paying them a wage, you are shifting income from your higher tax bracket to their lower tax bracket.

Strategy: If you are paying your children more than the standard deduction, they can shelter even more income from taxes by opening an IRA importance.

Hiring your children does not raise a red flag with the IRS, but you should document your children’s allowance and services with the understanding to audit-proof your tax return. To do this, keep a time sheet showing the date, hours and services provided by your children, and write them a bar for their wages.

Note: You may have heard of the “kiddie tax”. Earned , including wages that you pay your children, are not subject to t! he “kiddie tax” rules, neglectful of their age.

Exa mple: In 2007, you can pay your child up to $5,350 (the standard deduction amount in 2007) before either one of you would contract any taxes. Suppose you are in the 28% tax bracket and you pay your 15-year old son $5,000 over the course of the year to perform office related tasks.

You get a business deduction for the wages paid to your son, saving you $1,400 (28% of $5,000). In addition, this reduces the amount of profit that is subject to self employment taxes (15.3% of $5,000 = an additional tax savings of $765). Your gross tax savings in this example is $2,165.

Since your son’s earnings are less than the gauge deduction amount, he does not owe revenue taxes on his earnings. In addition, inasmuch as your son is under age 18, you do not have to pay Social Security, Medicare or unemployment taxes on him like you would with a regular employee.

Action: If you have children between the age of 7-17, consider putting them on the payroll. You will need t! o keep time sheets showing the dates, hours and services performed. You should also jot down them a check to substantiate the wages.

Filing Guide: You will need to file quarterly payroll tax reports (Federal Form 941, state payroll tax forms) for your children (even though no taxes are due). In addition, you will need to file a Form W-2 for your children at the end of the year.

Staging Your Home Could Be The Difference Between A Sale And Languishing On The Market

As we all know, you cannot make a second first impress. Consequently, your home must look inviting to prospective buyers from the moment they arrive at your door which makes curb appeal very important.

The lawn should be mowed and shrubs trimmed. Inexpensive spots of color can be added with flowering plants and potted plants near the entrance. If necessary, the front door should be painted and the house numbers made to shine.

All the clattering should be sequestered as buyers like a sense of spaciousness in your home. Kitchen counters especially should be clutter free and the house should look like Mrs. Clean lives there. After years of living in a house, clutter accumulates in many places such as shelves, counters, garages, basements, closets and drawers. A! s a homeowner, you become used to it and it will likely take a experienced eye to see what needs to be changed. If necessary, a small investing in a professional cleaning service will result in a higher selling price.

Keep blinds and curtains open to let in as much natural light as feasible. Turn on lights in bathrooms or areas that do not have windows. All windows should be clean and sparkling. In summer, be sure to keep your air conditioning at a agreeable level. If the weather permits, keep your windows open to allow fresh air to penetrate your home.

Time for a garage sale! Go through your closets and pack up all those old clothes to either sell or donate to your favorite gift. Get rid of the junk in your garage. If unavoidable, rent a storage space and deposit any items that you cannot throw away or sell.

Attend to your back yard. Sweep and hose down the patio, mow the lawn and trim the shrubs. Roll up the hose and store the garden tools away. As wi! th the front of the house, add some colorful potted plants ? g! eraniums are inexpensive, inspiriting and will thrive almost anywhere.

Do not cook any fragrant veggies such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli or Brussels sprouts no matter how much you may love them. Also, you may want to refrain from burning incense. Some people are allergic to incense and you would not want to lose a potential sale because your buyer had an attack of sneezing. If you feel the need to add a fragrance to your home, the aroma of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies pleases almost everyone.

If any of your rooms are painted an exotic color like deep purple, repainting the walls with a impartial color is a good idea. Home buyers need to be able to plot themselves into your house and imagine living there. Most people prefer soft, neutral standard so they can move their own furniture equitable in without having to make any decorating changes. Note the décor in builder?s model homes that features wall and window treatments as well as furniture in colors that m! ost buyers are comfortable with and find appealing.

Cash for Personal Injury Settlements

Your pain and suffering indemnity will most likely be minimized if you involve insurance companies in your settlement. Insurance companies give lower compensation because they intend to keep as much money as possible for themselves. To you, personal injury settlements are personal, but to them they are purely business.

Before insurance companies offer compensation, they will try to evaluate how serious the injury is. Usually, the less serious and costly the injury is, the better compensation offer you will receive. On the other hand, if the injury is more sedate and costly, the security against loss company will have to take the following information into account first: present and coming events medical needs, permanent benefits, pertaining to physics impairment and/or disf! igurement, lost income, loss of family member(s), loss of social or educational experiences, and pain and suffering such as post-traumatic stress turbulence, loss of marital relations, depression, anxiety, embarrassment, stress, and property damage.

Knowing the cost of atonement

Insurance companies formulate your compensation cost by adding up several items in a formula which includes all the injury-related therapeutic expenses. These are then multiplied by a number between 1.5 (for less severe injuries) and 5 (for more serious damage), and then added to the lost income due to the injury. Being aware of this information will help you negotiate your case and not be deceived by anyone.

Personal injury compensation also depends on which part of the country you live in. If you are in a low cost-of-living area in what place compensation and expenses are basically lower than that of a high cost area, then your compensation will also be low.

How To Clean Composite Decks

Cleaning composite decks is a person of consequence more property owners are focusing on this vernal season. Most consumers who opted for composite lumber for their decks did so with the idea that it would be maintenance-free and free from the kind of aging problems (warping, cracking, splitting, etc) that are often seen with pressure-treated lumber. Hindsight is always 20-20, as the old saying goes. Unfortunately today’s consumers are realizing that no wood or wood product exposed to weather is going to be completely maintenance-free. Even exotic woods like Ipé require periodic cleaning and sealing as the natural oils within the wood dry out. All exterior lumber used in deck interpretation should be maintained every year to defend it from the elements and ground in dirt. ! Composite lumber varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but it appears that all of the popular ones contain wood particles (these ground particles are called "wood flour" by the industry). That means that any of these particles on or near the surface of the entertainment, no cause of distress what they are mixed with, will react to Mother Nature the same way all wood does. Graying and staining are common problems - and the stuff of nightmares for deck owners. Manufacturers are getting calls every day from end users about these issues, and deck reparation contractors are stepping in with the fix.

Cleaning composite decks is important to keep the material looking its best. Properly cleaning composite decks should be done with a composite deck cleaner that is designed specifically for these unique materials. Some manufacturers have suggested using bleach or oxygenated bleach to clean the wood, but the results have been varied. Most pressure washing contractors who do ! deck restoration are finding through products made especially ! for this riddle, such as Flood’s Composite Wood Cleaner. The key to this particular product is in the surfactants and cleaning chemicals in its model.

This guide will give you the basic steps that should be used to get the best results when cleaning composite deck materials.

Preparing the composite deck:

Sweep debris like leaves, twigs and dirt off the deck first. Then rinse off the composite lumber to cool it off and change place heavy built up deposits of dirt and mud. Rinsing off the composite deck before anything else will cool the surface and prevent the possibility of flash drying the composite cleaner when it’s applied. Also wet down plants and grass around the deck and if necessary, Cover plants, grass, concrete and any other areas you don’t want the composite cleaner getting on.

Remove any stains on composite decks first!

Use oxalic, citric or phosphoric acid-based cleaners to remove rust stains from metal furniture. These wil! l also help remove leaf stains.

Use commercial degreasers containing propylene glycol, sodium hydroxide, and various detergents for removing grease and oil stains.

Spot removers or mineral spirits may be used carefully on persistent grease or oil stains but should be washed off post-haste with water, as it can damage the grain pattern. Spot removers normally include mineral pitch distillates, xylene, methanol, acetone, or other organic solvents. Use caution if the composite lumber has embedded color, as some solvents may affect the appearance. As always, test your cleaner on an inconspicuous spot.

To remove light mildew wash your composite deck periodically with a cleaner that contains or is mixed with Sodium Hypochlorite.

The cleaning process:

Apply your composite deck cleaner on the railings and floor in manageable sections. Cleaning too wide of an area at a time may allow the composite cleaner to dry on the surface which can cause discolorat! ion in some materials. Once the composite cleaner has sat on t! he surfa ce according to the directions, carefully power wash the surface in the direction of the grain, using less than 800 PSI. Use the character impressed washer to "rinse" the . Avoid holding the nozzle too close to the composite surface or holding it in any one spot too long. Hold the pressure wand about 8" away from the surface and "sweep" it off in a rinsing motion. Use a "golf swing" motion, and avoid washing each square inch of the surface. Keep the wand moving smoothly over the surface to avoid leaving marks. Proper technique determines the results, so take some time to practice when you are able to. Once you have completed that section, treat the next area and continue until the job is completed.

For regular maintenance, rinse off your composite deck periodically with a hose. Even if your deck appears clean, it is important to interrupt build-up of pollen and other debris. Mildew stains may occur where moisture, pollens, and/or dirt are present. Mildew necessarily a ! food source to grow, which can be grass, pollens, dirt, debris, wood and wood resins.

To repair scratches, nicks, cuts and grooves in most compounded decking stuffs you can try using a wire brush. Brushing will need to be consistent with the grain of the composite material and the brushed area will weather back in approximately 8-10 weeks. Make sure you try this in a hidden area first! Some materials could become discolored or damaged from wire brushing.

High-pressure lavation of composite decks is not necessary or advisable. Instead, hire a properly trained pressure washing company to do it correctly and safely. Or if you must do it yourself, use the proper-strength composite lumber cleaners to do all the work for you. Then you RINSE using your distress-washer. Doing it the right way means using your pressure washer to agitate slightly with MODERATE pressure and HIGH get water volume. Use the pressure washer responsibly. Too much pressure on the surface of comp! osite lumber can cause damages.

Are You A Spoiled Brat Negotiator?

I was pushing my chocolate-laden shopping cart at the grocery store the other day (yes - Divas grocery shop!) and saw a power negotiator in action.

This person was persistent, passionate and absolutely on purpose!

They were also less than 4 feet high.

Yeah -you guessed it lady - I saw a 6 year old girl with pig-tails seriously work her mother for a different kind of yogurt.

I know - yogurt? (if it had been me - it would have been sugar cereal or a chocolate bar all the way!)

You got it - this not much blonde, blue-eyed dynamo was determined she wasn't going to have to eat the stuff out of the "big" pliable, boring container. She wanted the stuff in the colorful tubes instead!

I kid you not - this is what I heard her say...(this child should be teach! ing sales)

"But Mom - this kind tastes greater good and I always eat it at educate."

BINGO!

Mom folded like a taco and a little girl got her box of tube yogurt. And a Sales Diva received some inspiration for a cylinder!

Are You A Spoiled Brat At Negotiating?

This little girl absolutely "Wowed" me with her negotiating skills for the cause that she inadvertently said what her mother needed to hear. Benefit. Benefit. Benefit.

So she actually wasn't a spoiled brat negotiator at all.

But YOU probably are.

One of the biggest reasons most people SUCK at negotiating is because it's all about ME, ME, ME!

Remember - a fortunate negotiation is not where you have STICKY FINGERS.

Follow these 5 Bossy Sales Diva Rules Instead:

1. Stay calm. If you're stamping your feet in the sandbox in all parts of what you want and lose all sense of logi! c...well then - you have just become vulnerable in the univers! e of neg otiating. And you're about to lose your favorite toy. (in my world - this way MONEY)

2. Pouting doesn't work. If your potential customer isn't seeing the value of what you offer - that's YOUR ISSUE and not theirs. No one likes a defensive cry-baby.

3. Share Your Toys. A successful transaction is where both parties feel like it was a Win-Win. No one should feel they were "taken for a merry-go-round-ride".

4. Play With The Right People. Are you really busy chasing mob who have no need for your services? You're going to get a lot of rejection. Be super clear on who your target audience is.

5. Don't Reward Bad Behavior. Hey - stop giving discounts to people who always want the cheapest price or who only want to buy something small. Reward your loyal customers, or people who are making a large commitment of time and investment in you.

When I was a kid, my sister's favorite expressio! n to me was "You're not the BOSS of me!"

She was right.

The only part who is THE BOSS OF YOU - IS YOU.

It's time you grew up and realized that you have VALUE and you don't have to be the cheapest kid on the block. You don't need everyone to like you - you just need more of the kinds who do.

So there.

The Disadvantages and Negative Aspects of Debt Consolidation

Consolidating your debts may seem like the quick fix to monetary troubles, but in reality it may just lead you to digging an even deeper financial hole. Consolidation advertisements promise not only reduced participation rates, but also lower monthly payments by almost 50%. However, there is definitely a grasp to the consolidation offer. Here are a few of the main disadvantages of a consolidation program:

1. You must be current on your debts: Most consolidation companies require that you be current on all of your accounts. Thus, if you are wrongdoer on any of your accounts, it may be difficult to enter into a program.

2. Administration fees and monthly food fees: The consolidation company charges you for their services. This money could be going to paying off your debt.

3. Affects credit score: Your credit score will be affected by joining a consolidation program.

4. No missed payments: If you are late on one monthly payment you can be dropped from the program.

5. Doesn't help you reject debt: The reality is that most people don't complete solidification programs because they aren't aimed at eliminating your debt. In fact, season the debaseed interest rate does mean less interest monthly, the lower monthly payments means that the debt will take longer to pay off. In essence, more of your monthly payment goes to paying off interest and not the balance on the card. Most individuals find themselves in worse debt then before because all they have done by joining the consolidation program is spread their debt out over a longer period of time.

The only true way to eliminate debt is by changing your spending habits. Debt consolidation in theory could be a solution to financial troubles, but unfortunately it doesn't battalio! n individuals to improve their financial habits, thus it becom! es just a temporary solution to a much larger problem.

Finally, if you are finding yourself in a financial situation requiring you to consider debt consolidation as well as other options, this might be a sign that you should seek some form of professional help. An expert may be able to give more insight into you personal situation and help you organize a plan to achieve financial independence.

Commercial Deal Based Negotiation Strategy

Are you approaching all your commercial negotiations with a standard approach? Should you only use a win/win approach to negotiations?

Traditionally, negotiated outcomes can be classified into one of the following categories:

Lose/Lose (all parties lose)Win/Lose (I win and you lose) Lose/Win (I lose and you win) Win/Win (we both win - could also be described as compromise) Win More/Win More (we unlock synergies - could also be described as being collaborative)

Whilst I agree with the notion that a win/win approach is the only sustainable way to gain competitive advantage in the marketplace, it is well worth considering the practical application of this approach in today's global marketplace. It would be short sighted to conclude that all negotiations are made equa! lly and should on that account be approached in the same way.

It would be resembling to say that one nation's culture & beliefs are the appropriate culture and therefore the standards that apply to that culture should be applied in interacting with the community the world, irrespective of their background.

Guns OR Butter

There is another dimension within the words immediately preceding of arising from traffic negotiations that should be considered - the old economic dilemma of 'guns or butter'. The 'guns or butter' untruth illustrates that with limited resources, organisations and individuals are forced to make choices. In order to have more butter, one must sacrifice guns and vice versa.

In a practical sense this instrument that resources can only be allocated in relation to the relative strategic importance of the exercise at passage out. In the case of negotiations that are considered strategic in importance to the organisati! on, we are more likely to pursue a collaborative or compromisi! ng appro ach.

Conversely, when we deem the outcome of certain negotiations to have a limited impact or no impact at all on the achievement of strategic organisational objectives we could decide to be competitive in our approach or even to withdraw from keep clear of negotiation completely. We would not be responsible stewards of corporate resources if we were to approximate all negotiations in a similar fashion.

Collaborative Approach

There is also a philosophical dimension to the approach to negotiation pursued by many organisations. Some organisations are renowned for their collaborative approach to doing business whilst others have a reputation for a mercenary approach to conducting business. Some players in the sell in small quantities sector have reputations of dealing ruthlessly with suppliers - they rationalise the approach by arguing that it is in the attract of the consumer.

Whilst I agree that this approach is short sighted and proba! bly not sustainable in the long run, it would be naïve not to recognise the fact that, at least commercially speaking, a lot of organisations have little interest in collaborative or compromising type negotiations within certain departments.

It is pleasing to note that whilst most organisations pride themselves on providing 'solutions' to the issues confronting their clients, a significant put in proportion of their so called negotiations actually revolve on every side of haggling about price. I have no doubt that there is a sincere intention to engage on a solution based principle it just seems that this is much easier said than done where the rubber hits the road. A lot of the time companies' stated intentions to engage on a win/win based principle is similar to the new year's resolutions so many of us make year.

Negotiation Strategy

There is scant chance of us achieving our resolutions without putting in set a supporting plan and alluri! ng action to achieve our goals. Many organisations lack a unha! mpered o rganisational negotiation strategy & process which exposes them to the risks associated with a huge variance in the results of their negotiated agreements.

Organisations and individuals should recognise that collaborative negotiation demands the investment of significant resources. In systematize for us to be truthfully collaborative, we have to spend much time getting to know each other. In a commercial context, this plainly does not make sense in some cases. Consider the purchase of a pure commodity such as writing for a unimportant or medium sized organisation - if there are no value added services presented or required, it would be sub optimal to pursue a collaborative relationship with the provider of such a commodity. It would make more sense to pursue a competitive approach to the procurement of bills of exchange than a collaborative or even compromising approach.

In practise, many organisations would approach the purchase of paper or stationery in a ! way where they would request multiple quotations and award the business to the lowest bidder. As a matter of fact, in some cases no negotiation at all would take occasion. An interesting note here is that this does not mean that the paper supplier has lost as a result of this transaction - they have won the order, but the telling circumstance is that we were not really biassed in their interests at all; we were only focused on our desired objectives. So pursuing a win/lose strategy in this example has not really resulted in a loss for the supplier, but it does mean that we were not really interested in their desired outcomes.

The flip side of this example is that if you are selling commodity type products, you have to realise that control you will be in a position to negotiate, you must create for yourself a base to do this from - hence the move towards providing solutions.

5 EFFECTIVE NEGOTIATION STRATEGIES

How then do we decide which neg! otiation strategy to follow? Within a commercial words immedia! tely pre ceding, the following negotiation tactics options are available to us:

Avoiding negotiation altogether. Engaging in a competitive negotiation to what we seek to achieve our goals aggressively. Engaging in an accommodating negotiation at what place we seek to satisfy only the of necessity of our counterparty to the exclusion of our own needsUsing a compromising approach where we seek to satisfy some of our needs and interests and some of the needs and interests of our counterparty.Deploying a collaborative transaction approach where we seek to satisfy all our needs and interests in addition to satisfying all the needs and interests of our counterparty.

The business strategy that is appropriate will be determined by your answers to the following two questions:

How strong are my alternatives to this particular negotiation? How important is a long term relationship in the context of this negotiation?

It follows that in many cases, buyers would be pursuing an app! roach where they are avoiding negotiation or being competitive and sellers would like to be compromising or collaborative. How then to deal with this position?

A key part of the negotiation preparation process should be focused on tiresome to understand your counterparties needs, interests and objectives. This will promote you in identifying the likely trading strategy that they will be pursuing. If your counterparty is avoiding a negotiation, you can be sure that your organisation is not being viewed as a contributor of competitive advantage to your counterparty's organisation.

Your challenge would in the 1st instance be to reconsider the way that your products and services are packaged. The aim should be to add to the achievement of the strategic business objectives of your counterparty by identifying the components of your offering that matches their strategic needs.

If you find yourself at the wrong end of a competitive negotiation, it! would serve you well to be familiar with the most often used ! negotiat ion tactics as you will most certainly be confronted with a tactical approach. Unless you are well versed in negotiation tactics, it will be difficult for you to maximise the value that you will be able to extract from the negotiation as there is no sincere interest on the part of your counterparty to satisfy any of your needs or interests.
